SAILING FOR MANGROVES

GREAT Institute is now accepting applications for the 2024 Sailing for Mangroves Expedition. This opportunity is FREE and open to current and previous Climate Change Biology students.

The Scientific Expedition focuses on three key areas:

  • Academic Exchange: Facilitating collaboration between Swansea University, University of Geneva, and GREAT Institute to train science students from UTG and early career professionals on coastal and maritime scientific research in The Gambia.

  • Mangrove Study: Investigating mangrove ecosystems at sites along the River Gambia. Scientific data will be gathered on its health through water and sediment sampling campaigns, employing advanced measuring equipment on board the sailing ship, Fleur de Passion, a 33-meter ketch flying the Swiss flag.

  • Global Warming Impact: Enhancing the understanding of the role of mangroves in the context of global warming. This includes analyzing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO2 and methane, captured and originating from mangroves.

Sailing for Mangroves - The Gambia

On board the sailing ship Mauritius, a 30-meter steel schooner flying the Swiss flag, Pacifique's mission is to explore the Gambia River along the following lines:

• Academic cooperation between the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland/ Swansea University, United Kingdom and the GREAT Institute, The Gambia to participate in the training of new generations of Gambian students on coastal and marine research

• Scientific mediation: transmission and sharing of information on the role of the mangrove through conferences before and after the expedition, archiving of scientific data and promotion of the project through the production of a film/documentary and a photo exhibition.

• Scientific research

· Collection of basic ecological information: diagnosis of the health of the ecosystem, including mangroves, through water and sediment sampling campaigns using measuring devices present on the Mauritius

· Analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from mangroves (CO2 and methane analysis on air, soil, and water samples in mangroves)

· Research on toxic algae growing in mangrove oysters and posing little-studied public health issues for women who collect these oysters for their livelihood.

Aquatic Virtual Conference

GREAT-ALSO.jpg

We are excited to host the first Aquatic Science meeting in The Gambia. The meeting will include a panel of amazing scientists presenting research to nurture cooperation for a sustainable future. By the end of the meeting, all participants will get a one-year free membership to the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).

The purpose of the ASLO virtual conference is to increase public awareness about aquatic resources and research and provide an opportunity to connect African researchers with one another and to the global L&O community.

Registration Closed

The meeting is free to all participants. Participants must be university students, recent graduate, university lecturer, career scientists or researcher.
